In 1961 the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored Freedom Rides to protest the Southern states to enforce the U.S. Supreme Court’s two decisions mandating the desegregation of public interstate travel facilities. Get on Board: Stories of the Los Angeles to Houston Freedom Ride website commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Freedom Rides. It celebrates the courage and optimism that inspired over 400 American heroes, both black and white to leave their schools, families, and homes—facing the threat of death, to secure the promise of freedom and liberty for all Americans.
